Translate and Illuminate

The project is an extension of Slocum Hall (Syracuse University Main Campus - Architecture building), and relates to the building and its surrounding context. The extension attempts to not only blend in with the context, but also take elements from it and TRANSLATE it into a modern version.

Many of the surrounding buildings have red masonry on the facade. The new extension of Slocum Hall attempts to translate the red facade of the context into a modern version by having sets of red translucent glass louvres.

The red translucent glass louvres would act as a solar shading device that rotates in order to more effectively block out excessive solar radiation. This rotation would also change the transparency and the colour of the facade. When the louvres are closed, the building would seem to have a red facade. When the louvres are open, the building would become more transparent as it has a glass facade on all the sides.

The glass facades of the building would also allow the building to ILLUMINATE at night, which would allow pedestrians to see the programs within the building. The red translucent glass louvres would again give different facade readings.
