Reinterpreting The Bean

Our Kiosk design attempts to blur the lines between the interior and exterior, pulling the users "inside", where they are surrounded by vegetation, natural light, and can still feel the breeze coming off Lake Michigan, but are protected from direct sun and inclement weather.

We looked at projects such as the N House by Sou Fujimoto, and MFO Park by Burchardt + Partners; both, of which create space whilst still being seemingly "outside." While N House is a project that used layers to striate the inside from the outside, MFO Park is a project based around systems - an occupiable space frame which encloses itself with vegetation.

With the additional constraint of working with the form of Anish Kapoor's Cloud Gate, we chose to rotate the bean onto its side to achieve a more practical form, and translate the outer shell into a trellis structure that could support a living wall of vegetation, and then creating an offset counter area for the future vendors.
